    Philip Osano is an environmental policy expert with an interest in environmental policy, development, and international affairs.

    He has 15 years of experience in applied research, project management, policy analysis, and university teaching, and has worked in over 10 countries in Africa, Canada, and the United States.

    Dr. Osano currently serves as the Center Director for the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa Center and coordinates multiple research projects and policy engagement in the fields of biodiversity and ecosystems; land use change; pastoral and rangeland management; climate change adaptation; air quality; agricultural policy; water and land management; and integrated environmental planning. He is also a lead author of the IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

    Dr. Osano holds a PhD in Geography (Environmental Policy) from McGill University, Canada, an MSc (Conservation Biology) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a BSc (Environmental Science) from Egerton University in Kenya

  • Prof. Micheni Japhet Ntiba, Ph.D, Dba, CBS

    Prof. Micheni Japhet Ntiba assumed office on 19th February, 2021 as the Chief Administrative Secretary, State Law Office and Department of Justice.

    Previously, he served as the Principal Secretary, State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Blue Economy, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. He has also served in the same capacity at the Ministry of Education, and as the Director of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nairobi.

    Prof. Ntiba has conducted research with numerous institutes and laboratories, such as the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Lowestoft Laboratory, Sufolk, United Kingdom.

    He holds a BSc in Biological Sciences and a Master’s degree in Hydrobiology from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in Fisheries Biology from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. He was awarded Doctor of Business (DBA) specializing in Fisheries Management (Honoris Causa) of Commonwealth University, Dubai. He is Fellow of the Commonwealth Academy of Leadership and Management (CALM) awarded by the Commonwealth University, United Kingdom.

  • Ms. Joy Owango

    Joy is an experienced award-winning Founding Director of the Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa) an award-winning  Trust registered in Kenya set up in 2006 and is the first African-based training centre to teach effective communication skills to scientists. TCC Africa is in partnership with the University of Nairobi, Kenya and provides capacity support in improving African researchers output and visibility through training in scholarly and science communication.

    She has a demonstrated history of working in higher education (in both private, university and non-governmental sectors). She was a successful higher education practitioner with Clarivate Analytics and worked with the following Governments, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Mauritius, Ghana, Senegal, Burkina Faso and created foundational opportunities valued at approximately USD 1.3Million. As the Director of TCC Africa, she is currently working with all 15 African countries that have committed to spending 1% of their GDP in Higher Education and Research and Development.

  • Prof. JPR Ochieng

    J. P. Ochieng’-Odero (JPR) is a scientist with a keen interest in the place of science, technology and innovation (ST&I) in economic development, and the role of learning and knowledge sharing in capacity strengthening, especially in the Global South. He is an ardent lobbyist for the increased use of research evidence to inform policy and practice.

    JPR has worked with integrated multi-disciplinary research teams involved in both field and laboratory areas of arthropod research. He also worked with the R&D Forum for Science led Development in Africa (RANDFORUM) where he was actively involved in programme planning and development activities, which included negotiating agreements with governments, bilateral and multilateral institutions, coordination and planning for regional S&T Roundtables and policy-oriented Summits.

  • Prof. J Catherine Ngila

    Prof Jane Catherine Ngila is the Former Acting Executive Director of The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) since mid-July 2020. She provides leadership and strategic direction of The AAS’s programmatic and operational management whose vision is to transforms lives in Africa through science. The AAS’s tripartite mandate is; (a) recognizing excellence through the Academy’s highly prestigious Fellowship, Affiliates and Award schemes; (b) Advisory and think tank functions for shaping Africa’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) strategies and policies and; (c) implementing key STI programmes addressing Africa’s developmental challenges.

    Prof Ngila is the immediate former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Riara University for Academic and Student Affairs (DVC-AA). She is also a former Deputy Director of the Institute of Oil and Gas (MIOG) under Kenya Pipeline Company, in charge of Training, Academic Programmes and Linkages. She is a Visiting Professor at University of Johannesburg, University of Nairobi, and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. She also worked at University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu Natal, University of Botswana and Kenyatta University.

  • Dr. Salome Guchu

    Dr. Salome Guchu is a Principal Officer Research, Innovation and Outreach Research, Innovation and Outreach at the Inter-University Council for East Africa. She is responsible for research and innovation collaboration and partnerships for Regional development, strengthening of Universities and science diplomacy. She was the founding CEO of the Kenya National Innovation Agency, where she set up the Agency by spearheading its operations, developing capacity and initiating key programmes for nurturing Kenyan innovators and support for innovation commercialization.

    She is a member of the United Nations 10-member group of Technology Facilitation Mechanism appointed by the UN Secretary General to advise the UN on the ways of harnessing Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. She previously served as a member of UK-Kenya High level Challenge Board on science, technology and innovation; Board of Trustee for National Research Fund and Board of National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation.

    Dr. Guchu holds a PhD in Chemistry from University of Nairobi. She has also pursued professional development programmes on policy development and management, strategic leadership and corporate governance.

    When not addressing matters related to research and innovation, Dr. Guchu likes to spend time in schools and voluntary programmes for mentoring and encouraging young people, especially girls, not to shy away from pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

  • Dr. Catherine Lukhoba

    Dr. Catherine Lukhoba is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi and most recently appointed as the Director, School of Biological Sciences. She is the first woman to hold this position at the College of Biological and Physical Sciences since its inception in 2006.
