I, John Kariuki Kamanu am an agricultural graduate, holder of a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc. Agriculture, honours in crop sciences) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in India and a Masters graduate (MSc. in Agricultural Resource Management) of the University of Nairobi. I am currently a PhD candidate in Dryland Resource Management at the University of Nairobi. I also hold a Diploma in Professional Proofreading and Editing from Maple Publishing Company of United Kingdom, having qualified in 2004.
I am an associate member of Kenya Society for Agricultural Professionals (KESAP). In April 2011, I own a company (Agrivas Consultants) to offer consultancy services to the agricultural industry and training of farmers in Kenya. Currently I am a consultant with Equity Group Foundation, working on their agriculture project. I work for the Training Centre in Communication, Chiromo Campus, University of Nairobi as a trainer in scientific writing and publication.
I was bestowed a ‘Long Service Award’, during the Nairobi International Trade Fair on 3rd October 2007 by the Agricultural Society of Kenya for eleven years of dedicated service to the Society and the agicultural industry in Kenya. I have attended educational institutions for various studies, worked and lived in India, Pakistan, United Kingdom, Germany, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda.
I am a goal-oriented agricultural manager and communication expert, adept at skill development in scientific writing and profit initiatives in both public and private sector. I possess proven ability to husband complex multi-sectoral, resource intensive agri-business budgets in both arable and livestock enterprises. I am a respected leader, equipped with powerful communication, coordination and scientific analytical skills in technology transfer and agri-business consultancy. Recently, I was endowed with skills in the management of scientific research, data processing, analysis and agricultural technology development for transfer to TOTs and training of end users. I am equipped with skills of disseminating research results and subsequent recommendations by publishing in scientific journals, poster preparation and presentation in conferences and in booklets/manuals. I published my first “peer reviewed” primary scientific article in the Journal of Applied Bioscience (55: 3944-3952, ISSN 1997-5902) titled, “Growth, yield and quality response of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants to different inorganic fertilizer applications in Central Kenya”.
I am an excellent administrator endowed with thirty years work experience in training, empowerment of personnel working in institutions/industry, on scientific communication and publication of findings and recommendations. I have been a lecturer in the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, CAVS, University of Nairobi since September 2012. I am highly enthusiastic that my biological science background as an agronomist/ researcher, provides me with the necessary tools requisite for developing current professional skills for training upcoming researchers/ refreshing experienced scientists/PIs in the field of scientific writing and publication under TCC’s curriculum.
