TCC Africa Supports MP Shah Hospital’s Research Capacity Through Ethics Training Nairobi, Kenya

04 July 2025 Categories: latest news, News, Press Releases

TCC Africa has been working with MP Shah Hospital to strengthen the hospital’s research capabilities since we signed our strategic partnership in November 2024. The partnership focuses on helping the hospital develop into a leading health research institution.

In line with these objectives, we delivered two comprehensive training programs between May and June 2025, with a focus on medical ethics and research funding. The Medical Ethics Training for Senior Management was conducted in two phases and specifically tailored to enhance ethical decision-making across departments.

The first session took place on May 29th, 2025, bringing together 22 department heads and senior staff from Nursing, Pediatrics, Procurement, Legal, IT, and Quality Assurance.

Dr. Charles Oyaya facilitated the session, covering core ethical principles like beneficence, autonomy, nonmaleficence, and justice. The training looked at practical challenges around informed consent and how medical ethics intersects with Kenyan healthcare law and human rights. This timing was particularly relevant given MP Shah’s plans to expand its clinical research activities.

The follow-up session on June 26th took a more hands-on approach. Participants worked through case studies and department-specific scenarios to practice applying ethical principles in their daily work. The two phases helped reinforce the key concepts and create stronger accountability systems across different departments.

Trainees engaging in thoughtful group discussions on ethics, examining moral principles, codes of conduct, and personal judgment that guide right decisions in professional practice.

“We’re working with MP Shah to make ethics central to how decisions are made throughout their institution,” explained Joy Owango, TCC Africa’s Executive Director. “As they grow their clinical research focus, we know that solid ethical foundations aren’t optional anymore.”

TCC Programme Manager & Head of Universities Relations, Mr Harrison Weda, giving  opening remarks

Harrison Weda, TCC Africa’s  Programme Manager and Head of University Relations, emphasized the importance of building institutional capacity: “This training is part of our broader vision to empower African healthcare institutions to strengthen their research foundations.”

These training programs fit into our broader 2025-2028 partnership goals with MP Shah Hospital. We’re working together to build research capacity that prioritizes both scientific excellence and ethical standards throughout the hospital.
