Africa PID Alliance Showcases African-Led Data Infrastructure at the African Plant Genomics Symposium at the United States International University, Kenya

The Africa PID Alliance (APA) participated in the recently concluded African Plant Genomics Symposium, where it presented its work on persistent identifiers (PIDs) designed to strengthen African data sovereignty, visibility, and research integrity.

The symposium, held under the theme of advancing plant genomics across the continent brought together over 100 delegates from academia, government, industry, and civil society. It featured contributions from distinguished scientists and emerging researchers alike.

The Africa PID Alliance (APA) contributed to the symposium through a poster presentation titled

“Enhancing African Data Sovereignty and Representation: The Role of the Africa PID Alliance in Ensuring Ownership and Recognition of African Research Projects,” presented by Mr. Nicholas Omino. The poster showcased DOCID™, APA’s persistent identifier infrastructure designed to empower African researchers and institutions to retain control over their data, trace scholarly contributions, and ensure long-term discoverability. These capabilities are critical in addressing extractive or helicopter science practices, which often undermine African ownership and visibility in global research.
